ohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) be-
lieves that time is gold and work is the road to success and accuracy the title of excellence. He follows
the vision of the wise leaders of the UAE which stresses that being on top should not be compromised and
that success yields more success and distinction. From his position as Al Ghanim leads the organization
effectively and passionately. He aims to lay a firm foundation for the telecommunications sector to achieve
the UAE Vision 2021. In order to achieve that, Al Ghanim seeks to promote competition inside the telecom-
munications sector as well as other sectors to keep pace with the latest developments in the ICT world.
Under his leadership, TRA developed a full-scale road
map for transition toward smart government to include
all technical, administration, regulatory, economic, me-
dia and awareness aspects. The road map should also
serve as a technical reference for all government agen-
cies in the field of smart service development.
Al Ghanim also led the UAE telecommunications sector
to much progress. The My Number My Identity cam-
paign he launched contributed in reinforcing the user
database at service providers.
Al Ghanim confirms that his main goal is people satisfac-
tion and happiness and achieving high ranks on the com-
petitiveness index. He states that TRA app will be unveiled
during GITEX 2014.The app will offer numerous excellent
services.
In our interview with Al Ghanim, he discusses a number
of aspects of concern to the telecommunications sec-
tor in the UAE. Moreover, he discusses TRA’s role in
the transition to smart services.
Telecommunications Sector
Can you tell us more about the latest devel-
opments of the telecommunications sector
in the UAE? What is recent progress in the
industry?
The UAE telecommunications sector was
steadily growing over the past year be-
tween May 2013 and May 2014. The
number of landline subscribers rose at
4.4% from 2,035,929 to 2,125,332 sub-
